DVD Drive Access Distorts Sound

When I'm playing music, the sound becomes warped and distorted and I've noticed it coincides with DVD access by virtue of the flickering green light. I'm ripping a DVD and the idea is that it takes 50/100 Mb of data from the DVD and puts it into memory so it doesn't need to continually access the DVD drive. The light keeps flashing every 10 seconds or so and besides, surely this sound distortion shouldn't occur during DVD access anyway?
