Default Notebook SATA HD

What do notebook SATA HDs look like, in the way of the interface. Can a notebook SATA HD be hooked up to a desktop SATA port directley or is an adapter needed like for PATA notebook HDs.

so they look like desktop SATA connectors. Are they the same size ?
can you plug a notebook HD into a desktop sata data cable and power ?
