Default Possible fry job...???

My niece has a 2004 Toshiba Satellite 70 or 700 series laptop. There was a lightning storm in the area yesterday and now it won't do much at all and this is what it is doing at startup:"SES03: The reboot screen will come up and say Windows is rebooting and will come up (this is the black screen w/ white writing) and it is in clear color, then it will count down. Window XP will come up (but you can barely see it) and the little green thing that normally goes back and forth when it is booting up, doesn't do anything" . Does anyone know what this means? Doesn't sound good to me.
Thanks for any info
Allan

if the machine is able to post and then attempt boot up it suggest that the motherboard is ok, i would imagine that there is possible some damage to the screen/connectors for the screen, and/or the hard drive too if its unable to boot.

edit: in fact i did have a similar problem with my desktop some time back, when the windows booting screen started to fade into view it never came up fully so was difficult to see and the bar was not moving across, in the end i had to replace the HDD and all worked fine. First thing i would try though is a windows reinstall...if you have the disc see if you can boot from it and see if that helps.

If it still boots up than maybe you can try to reinstall Windows. Also it could of just fried some of your ram that might explain why Windows won't start up.

EDIT: About the screen. It could be as simple as a contrast adjustment or it could be serious like jimmymac mentioned.
