Is there a good program that you can make a avi file into a dvd file to play on your dvd player?

I've used NeroVision, and like it a lot. However, it is not free, if that is an issue for you.

NeroVision is a separate program from the regular Nero Burning ROM. If you do actually have NeroVision, you just go to "Make DVD Video" and it will allow you to choose the file to import, make a menu screen, etc.

I'm not exactly sure, let me check when I get home so I can refer to my system there.
