Default SATA problems

320 gig sata came today, when i hook it BIOS recognizes it, but when i boot from my XP disc the loader does the usual, it asks if i need raid drivers etc, and then before its about to list my partitions, BOOM

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

i get the blue screen of death. im am completely lost as to why its doing this. my 250 gig is unplugged and the 320 is completely new, and the jumper is set for the safe 1.5 Gb/s.
