Default 2nd HDD problem - please help

I have 2 HDD, both are IDE. I recently format and re-installed Windows XP on my 1st HDD. While booting into Windows for the first time, the screen flashed and Windows blue screen appeared briefly. It seemed that something was done to my 2nd HDD because when I booted into Windows, I noticed that some files on 2nd HDD are lost (mainly the most recent ones).

A few days later, my PC froze so I decided to format and reinstall Windows XP on my 1st HDD again. This time I took my 2nd HDD out. I am now would like to add my 2nd HDD back. Is there a possibility that I will lost some files on my 2nd HDD again? Why did some files were lost before? Would I be better off getting an external enclosure to connect up my 2nd HDD?

Thank you.

No, it sounds like your second HDD is done actually. Any chance it is a Western Digital?

It is Seagate. What do you mean when you said my 2nd HDD is done? Can I safely put it back to my PC?

Thank you.

Seagate and Western Digital are the two best brands in my opinion. i'd say its a motherboard problem. did you overclock your FSB/ Hypertransport? does your board support RAID levels of any sort?

No, I didn't overclock my PC and I don't have RAID.

Do you think it will be safe to put my 2nd HDD back or not? I don't want to lost any more data but I need to access some files on my 2nd HDD.

Thank you.
