xp home upgrade question (need quick response pls)

Do i need windows xp home (non upgrade) install on my system to install the upgrade, or can i just have a different windows install like 98 or ME. In the system requirements it says

PC Operating System: Microsoft Windows

Any version of Windows will do... they wouldn't make you already have XP Home to upgrade to it...
