Default e6300 is it worth it?

I am building a budget c2d system. To get my budget fitting good i would need to downgrade to 6300 from 6400
.is the 6300 still a great cpu and good at ocing?
will it be just as good with games?

that processor is the same thing with a lower multiplier. see i find that you need to find a good balance between processor memory and motherboard... memory and motherboard allow you to overclock the processor more. im getting the e6400 just for the extra multiplier. if you're willing to do a bit of soldering i hear on overclock.net of a mod you can do to your motherboard to unlock upward multipliers on core 2 duo's.

thats pretty neat.im not willing ot engage into activites like that..no were near experienced enough.
im looking for a solid cpu that i can oc to a comfortable speed and leave it there and keep stable.
im sure the 6300 would do that right?

My E6300 is overclocket to 2.5GHz, i know that i can oc more, but i don't han't to risk (im not a very good overclocker )
Mine works faster than FX62 and E6600

As noted, the Conroe's are really OC'ing great. If you're going to get a 2MB core, its your choice if you want the extra multiplier for what...30 or 40 bucks? Haven't looked at the Conroe over-inflated prices in a while. If you want the 4MB version (as mentioned, if you're doing heavy encoding/compressing projects) then all bets are off. Sure you can get the lowest 4MB version...but you're already paying up a premium...why not get one clocked higher already to clock?

Really..just do what you want, and what you can afford. I've been planning on building a s939 X2 4200 system, but now I'm considering waiting a bit longer for Conroe pricing to smooth out, and build a healthy Intel system. Really..just do what you want and can afford.

I would have to say it's a great CPU for the price! I have mine running at 3.05 Ghz at 30 - 40 degrees Celcius.

You have to keep in mind that the E6600 has 4Mb of L2 cache while the E6300 has 2Mb. So it's not 100% sure that your E6300 is faster in everything.

Here's what an online buddy has achieved with a E6300 that has now been folding for more than 24 hours without a problem and if you know folding it taxes a system even more than Prime95's torture test does.

The over clock was done on a Gigabyte board.

He was able to iron out the FSB problem using DDR 800 Patriot memory, timings 4-4-4-12. I personally would prefer to use a pro version of Corsair for the extra heat spreader that they include on them.
