How critical is cooling the northbridge?

Well it has to be cooled, otherwise it will overheat and crash your system. But there isn't a reasonm to upgrade from the stock cooler, unless it's really loud and you want a quieter one. But DO NOT remove the heatsink or fan.

Well, I was thinking about replacing my stock, passive heatsink with the CoolMaster heatsink and fan.

It's not necessary, but if you want to add a third party heatsink/fan go ahead. It may lower the temps a bit as well.

Unfortunately northbridge cooling is a fact of life with AMD motherboards. The stock cooling will work fine, but you will probably find that the fan will eventually seize up. That's what I hate about those stupid things.
