Question Sony memory stick (laptop)

Hello !

Does anyone know why my memory stick port seems to be not working in my laptop?? Its a Sony Vaio laptop and a memory card from a Sony Cybershot...theoretically i can pop the memory stick straight into the laptop and download pics...But when i do this NOTHING happens???
Any advice please......
