Well, I havent shared this with anyone yet, so here it is. Last october our town has a thing that called the october fest, where everyone from all over the state and us brings there stuff and has yard sales for about 15 miles, its called the worlds largest yard sale. Well, our school was selling a few of there computers and Me, and two friends chipped in and bought them. Well, we got home, hooked it up, and was browsing through randomn files, when all of a sudden, I see something that sais "ss#". I open it and there sets a list of every student in my high schools social security number, We are shocked that they would sell a computer that has this info. So, we get a idea.....The october fest goes on for a few days, so we went back the next day to find out principal there. I go up to him and say, "Mr. Heidi I bought a computer here yesterday and it contained everyones social security number in the high school." He waits a second then replies, "I think you should turn those back into the school." I reply with, "I think you should buy them back from me." After a angry expression crosses his face he goes, "If I dont get that computer monday morning, you will be in inschool suspension for a week." I simply turn and walk away. Now looking back on the situation, I dont think he had the power to do that to me at all, but being a freshman, I didnt want any trouble. Monday We loaded the computer in my friends car, and walked up to mr. Heidi and handed it to him. He said, "thank you" and walked away. Now what he doesnt know is that we copied all of that information and still have it. I just wish I would have known he couldnt do anything to me as in "in school" wise. What do you guys think about this??

So...you're admitting that you have every students SSN? Isn't that, oh I don't know, illegal? Are you trying to blackmail him or something?

You went about it all wrong.
The fact that you purchased the computer legally without knowing what was on the computer at the time of the purchase means that you should be compensated, monetarily. The way you handled the situation made your principal think you were blackmailing him by demanding money. You should have told the principal that you saved up and bought this computer and it is unfair that you have lost the money because some faculty member did not wipe the drive clean. Keeping the file with the SS#'s is a federal offense. I would strongly suggest you get rid of that information. (On a side note, this is just more confirmation of how easy it is for people to get their hands on SS#'s. That is why schools, and for that matter, businesses, should NEVER use SS#'s as a means of identification. California has finally begun to crack down on schools using SS#'s as identification and have begun assigned unique ID numbers instead.. more states should do the same). Back to your situation. Delete the SS# file and talk to your principal about getting your money back from the computer that you legally purchased. If not, talk to a counselor and explain the situation in a level headed manner.

While you may have seen it as a way to gain a quick buck, the principle will have seen it as an attempt of blackmail, whereby you threaten to reveal what you know unless he pays you off. That'd probably be why he threatened to put you in school suspension.
I suggest you destroy any data of SS#'s that you have, and stop trying to make money from the school's mistake. You should only be looking for what's rightfully and legally yours monetarily. Edit: And if he refuses to refund you, then you certainly shouldn't use the copy you made as leverage to get your refund, that again is blackmail. You should go through official routes. woahhh
he got insanely lucky that you were the one that bought it. lol The only thing was that he could probably argue that you were being "disrespectful" at an organized school event. But that would of been unprofessional on his part. Anyway, I hope you at least got a refund. lol

Geez, did you ever go about that wrong. Ouch.
I would have made a little trip to the newspaper... There is something seriously wrong with that system and exposure would have ensured that it was corrected. That's a severe breach of security. I read about one incident a little while ago where a laptop was stolen from a war vet's house. On it was all the SS#'s and personal info for every single war vet in the United States. It was HUGE news.
