Question Defrag needed but no cigar...

I'm trying to defrag my laptop's hard drive but I can't.

I analyze it, it informs me that it is much needed (which can becomes self-explanatory once you see the graph), and when I start the defrag it tells me it can't defrag... just that. Cannot defrag drive!

What is this? Any advice?

Windows requires a certain amount of free space on the drive in order to defragment (15% if I remember rightly). Unless you meet that criteria, you won't be able to defragment fully, although it can do a partial defrag with I think 8-9%.

Sometimes drives can also have errors on them which prevents defrag from running. Try running scan disk. If you can't, I think it usally asks if you'd like to run it when the machine boots...

What type of defrag program are you using? If you are using the windows one then maybe you should try another one. I would recomend diskeeper lite. Here is the link to download it: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207

And it is free. What I like about this program is it uses the same engine to defrag computers like the pro version. The only difference is if you want to run another program, it will lag. But in the pro version it wont.

Hope this helps
