Default processor recommendation

I have about $300 for a new processor. I havent been keeping up with whats out there so I dont really know what I should get. I prefer AMD over Intel...and I know AMD just cut their prices by quite a bit. Thanks for any suggestions.

For $300 i buy Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, the AMD cut prices becouse core 2 duo is faster, cheaper.

Do you have money for a new motherboard too? Or just the processor?

Well, I'm going to have to disagree with aspire. Go for a Core 2 Duo E6400 like [ULKER] said. Newegg is out of stock for now, but here's the link.
