Default Chinese language in english windows

Hopefully someone can help me out..

I've just installed windows xp (english version) onto my girlfriend's computer (shes chinese). In the control panel, in regional and language options, I've installed the "east asian languages", the "complex script and right-to-left languages" and a "Chinese (PRC)" keyboard. I'm able to view chinese websites, but that about it. I can't type in chinese (I've clicked on the language bar to change to chinese setting), see the writing in chinese programs, or even see the writing on the icons. Instead of chinese font, all I see is random symbols like for example QQÓÎÏ·

Do you have a chinese font installed on your system?
Plus on a Chinese PC setup you might need a Chinese version of that program for it to view text and icons correctly.

thanks for the replies but i have windows xp, and that website sais that is should be built into xp by selecting "east asian languages" which i did. That program seems to be mostly for ms office anyways. My girlfirend just needs to use a program called qq (www.qq.com) to chat, but all she sees is wierd lines and symbols.

ill try to download it anyways and see what happens

If you want to take better pics, just hit Print Scrn on your keyboard, then right click on the desktop, New>Bitmap Image, then Edit it (opens paint) then just hit CTRL+V, and you have a screenshot. Send us a few of those.

thanks for the advice

this shows my language settings as well as QQ which is full of random characters. You can also see that my desktop has a few icons with the same kind of random characters.

There's always some trouble mixing languages in Windows. My dad's laptop can't open chinese word documents, even though the characters don't show up as jiggerish. The easiest thing to do is grab a version of the Chinese xp, and install it on a seperate partition. This way, your gf will have the english and chinese xp installed on her computer and she can do w/e she wants to in chinese without having trouble.

found a solution
njstar.com has a few programs which will decode chinese characters. It's not perfect but most things are able to show up. For example, the translator which was important to her is able to work, but QQ not so much.
