Default need help choosing platform

hello all, i use nero to recode video alot and also like to multi task like download music and listen to it as well while doing other things at the same time. currently i have a 939 msi mobo with amd athlon 3500 with 1 gig kingston duel channel ram, and a msi 6600 le pcie card. im averaging in nero when recoding about 60-75 fps (frames per second). i want something that will boost those numbers up significantly. im wondering, since i already have a 939 platform, should i upgrade my cpu to a amd x2 and if so which one, or should i go for just a higher single core from amd. or should i sell my systme and build a intel 775 platform with say a pentium d 945, or a high pentium 4 with hyper threading. if i sell my systme i woiuld get maybe $600-$650 for the tower, so if anyone recomends a 775 transfer, thats my budget, and if anyone recomends keeping the 939 platform, my budget for the processor is around $250. thanks for all the opinions

You can get a great processor for your Socket 939 motherboard without spending anywhere near $250. Personally, the X2 3800+ is a great value. However, getting a new processor won't boost your frames per second to much, since your graphics card is bottlenecking the system. I would suggest getiing the X2 3800+ (or X2 3600+) and then purchasing a 7600GS (around $90) to go along with that. You would still stay under your budget, as well as having a much better system. Who knows, you probably can get some money from your 3500+ and the 6600 off of ebay.

nero is burning/recording software. A faster processor would help with encoding so i guess recording would fall under the catagory of CPU task along with the drive.
