Default HTPC question

I've decided to build an HTPC (Home Theater PC) for the hell of it and for bragging rights to my friends lol . Anyways I'm deciding on a wireless mouse and keyboard. Here are a few questions regarding that.

-Should I buy a Mouse/KB "combo" or get them individually (I've heard combos use the same receiver and can cause problems between the two devices)
-Should I stay with RF or go Bluetooth?
-If Bluetooth, will it come with a BT receiver or does the comp have to be Bluetooth enabled? (some kind of hardware to buy?)

-Also, what is the VFD (little integrated display) actually used for on HTPCs?

Thank you for any answers.
