Best Free video editing software?

I know about MSMM, but is there any little gems that many don't know about that are great?

I don't know of any freeware apps right off. However, I first started learning with a copy of Ulead Video Studio I got at Best Buy for $10. So, maybe you can find some older versions of programs like that to get you started...?

Will that allow me to make slide shows into videos. via importing them into the program and adding music? If so do you have a link to that program?
http://www.geometrywars.wordpress.com is an example of what I'm doing. I am making an updated version and wanted to make it better etc. With that slide show/video, I made the slides in Open office and imported them as Jpeg's into MSMM and it worked good. But do you think Ulead will do a better job?
