Hello there!
I've been thinking about buying new memory (ddr) And I've heard that it's very important that the memory type & speed of the memory sticks fits eachother. I have 4 memory sticks atm. 256x2 & 512x2. And I wanna buy another two 1024mb memory sticks to replace the 256mb sticks with. But I really dont know what to look for since im a total noob when it comes to ddr memory ![]() Would be grateful for help & advices Here's the specs of my current memorys; property - value Capacity 1536 MBytes Location System board or motherboard Maximum Capacity 4096 MBytes Memory Slots 4 Error Correction None Name Fysiskt minne Use System memory Device Locator Slot 1 Manufacturer Infineon (formerly Siemens) Part Number 64T64000HU3.7A Serial Number 03147B15 Capacity 512 MBytes Memory Type DDR2 SDRAM Speed DDR2-533 (266 MHz) Data Width 64 bits Voltage SSTL 1.8V Error Correction None Refresh Reduced (.5x)...7.8 µs Manufacturing Date 2005, Week 36 EPP SPD Support No Device Locator Slot 2 Manufacturer Samsung Part Number M3 78T3354CZ3-CD5 Serial Number 0308FBF4 Capacity 256 MBytes Memory Type DDR2 SDRAM Speed DDR2-533 (266 MHz) Data Width 64 bits Voltage SSTL 1.8V Error Correction None Refresh Reduced (.5x)...7.8 µs Manufacturing Date 2005, Week 39 EPP SPD Support No Device Locator Slot 3 Manufacturer Infineon (formerly Siemens) Part Number 64T64000HU3.7A Serial Number 03147611 Capacity 512 MBytes Memory Type DDR2 SDRAM Speed DDR2-533 (266 MHz) Data Width 64 bits Voltage SSTL 1.8V Error Correction None Refresh Reduced (.5x)...7.8 µs Manufacturing Date 2005, Week 36 EPP SPD Support No Device Locator Slot 8 Manufacturer Samsung Part Number M3 78T3354CZ3-CD5 Serial Number 030EFBFA Capacity 256 MBytes Memory Type DDR2 SDRAM Speed DDR2-533 (266 MHz) Data Width 64 bits Voltage SSTL 1.8V Error Correction None Refresh Reduced (.5x)...7.8 µs Manufacturing Date 2005, Week 39 EPP SPD Support No Warning! If your motherboard supports faster RAM, I would go with DDR2-667.
But if you want to be on the safe side, just pick up a 2x 1GB of DDR2-533 sticks. And for more performance, you should only use the 2x 1GB sticks. Using 4 reduces performance, and it's not likely you will need more then 2GB.

so if I bought 2x 1gb sticks and used them beside the 2x 512mb sticks the performance wouldnt be as good as if I only used the 2x 1gb sticks? seems a little bit weird

You wont notice much (if any) of a performance decrease if you have 4 sticks of RAM, except if you look carefully at benchmarks. There really isn't much of a need for 3GB of RAM, but you're more then welcome to use it if you think you will be using that much.
