CPU and RAM is the most important factors. If you plan to play video games then video card becomes almost as important. If you want to run your computer fast then you need enough RAM to avoid halfing to use virtual memory which is very slow. CPU important because well it cant go faster then the cpu can go.

I am going to disagree with some of you.

I know there are many people who overclock their machines and I have nothing againt it, but for the majority of people there is no need.

No matter how fast the CPU is, there is always other areas on the computer that are slower. Bus speed... FSB speed, level 2 cache, level 1 data and trace cache.. and the amount and speed of your main RAM...

I believe these components are more important in the upgrading of your machine than your CPU. I also think the buffer size on your HARD DRIVE and also the RPM's can speed things up.

I guess I am from the school of thought that says: if you want to speed up your computer start with RAM and end with RAM.

If you say speed of ram more important then cpu speed then why does a athlon 64 fx-55 using ddr400 outperforms a p4ee3.46 using ddr2-711 in most video games. clearly the system with the pentium has the faster ram. If you talking about amount of ram then you are right nothing slow down a computer more then using virtrual memory.

Not old school. Any modern computer eng course will teach you that (and ive introduced that kinda philosophy kinda with OC101 ... its just that OCing the CPU is much easier and feasible than OCing the RAM ... why? cuz for the most part a CPU is a CPU ... RAM comes in various OCable flavours) ... OC102 will deal more with RAM and specifics

1. Clearly nothing
2. DDR2 is crummy and lags out because of feedback interferrence.
3. The first P4s were outdone by the last P3s ... but look at them now
4. When you make a comparison -- make it a meaningful comparison. Comparing ondie vs off die memory controllers is one thing. Comparing DDR vs DDR2 is another thing. Comparing all four parameters together mean jack shit all.

Wanna bet?
