I can easily list a few free utilities that will locate and even remove annoyances like that. You were probably hit with a trojan downloader/browser hijacker crap there. Here's a few great ones for finding just where on the drive a main bug is located. One of these will most likely remove some things there as well.

AVG 7.1 Free edition is great at pointing out where something is hidden. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
While you are there grab Ewido at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/ewido-an.../lng/us/tpl/v5

Sometimes AdAware SE Personal will completely remove a hijacker with ease. You can download that free at http://www.lavasoft.com

Avast and Commodo are available at http://freeware.intrastar.net/virus.htm
A pair of long lists of freewares and sharewares can be looked over at the links here. After you can post a HiJack This log if needed. Find the main trojan first however. That will just keep creating new startups.

For information on Internet Explorer errors sometimes mistaken for viruses, http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/erriexpl.htm For HiJack This in order to post a log after, http://www.hijack-this.org/

After running Avast try a run with AVG, Spybot Search+Destoy, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and a few others like Ewido. If you come up with a name of the malware there that will be useful as well. Sometimes you have to locate a special removal tool for cleaning some off of your system.
