Default shutting down

have just fitted new graphics card so son can play game but on loading up game and starting to play monitor goes into standby and can only restart by turningof computer on mains switch. Is this because the graphics card is not right for the game or settings are wrong.

what graphics card is it and what operating system are you running?
also, have you installed the latest drivers for the card?
