While considering that they probably haven't got plans for the the external graphics controllers set out yet, probably at least a good 3-4 years before pci-e starts becoming obsolete, however, the next thing may just be to make a faster pci-e slot. It's very hard to tell with the way technology moves, but it's probably safe to say that pci-e will have a strong foothold for quite a while.
