Default New to the forum need some input...

Ok so right now I have this played out old Dell. I am looking to upgrade. So far I am buying things off ebay and TigerDirect.com

As I get some new parts coming in I am going to start the build. I went to school for computer building... but only for 2 months or so.

I need some ideas and input on putting this together.

First off I bought a case...

Next I am looking for a CPU, Motherboard, and RAM

Here's where the questions come.
I know I am going to pick out the CPU before I pick out the motherboard. Can/SHould I just use the mother board from my current computer and just get a new CPU?
I want my program to run at the speed of light but I do not want to spend a lot.
Give me some suggestions please.
As for RAM how much should I buy?

That's a little hard to answer because we have no clue what you have... As for RAM, 1G should be fine.

Nothing comes up on google or dell's site...

I'd get you a 10% chance of us agreeing you should actually keep the motherboard, but I did want to know what you had. Regardless, if it's older, it's probably too dated for any decent upgrades.

I think if your buying a new motherboard. (I think your old one will not be able to run Core 2 Duo) You should buy a Core 2 Duo E6300 for its performance/price, if you have more money take E6600. I would buy a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3, Core 2 Duo E6300 and 1GB of ram, maybe Corsair brand.
BTW, what power supply do you have?

The PSU is going to be the Q-Tec 450 Watt... I am going to add a lot of neons and other things...do you think this will work?

in short... no... it only has a 20 pin connector (most motherboards support only 24 pins these days) and only 16A on the 12V rail...

it would be better off to post you budget for each item or the entire build and we could suggest the best components available...

Ok sounds good.. like I said I am very new to this.. I only went to school for like a month or two.. didnt learn anything.. lol

I would like to use anything from my current computer that I can. If I can use anything let me know. Like the video card and such.
Once again I have a Dell Dimension L400C

I need to get the following stuff still (if i can use any current harware let me know):
Motherboard
CPU w/ heatsink/fan
RAM
Video Card
Sound Card
Hard Drive

I already got a CDRW and a DVD Rom

I would like to be able to multitask quickly and store a lot of information. The computer will be used for webpage design and storing a lot of MP3's. Also I would like to have multiple neons installed just for looks.
