Its not like that. Its just we would rather save a few bucks and put in 30 minutes of work putting it together.
Thats my point entirely .... time is money ... thats why people get paid to goto work

Quote:
Why would you pay yourself?.......
You've obviously missed my point...

Quote:
As you guys get older you will realize that time is money. Your time will always be worth something, even if you're smokin' a dube with the old lady.

You have to put a value on your time. Would you work for $5.00/hr? $10? $50? I work for $50/hr. I assessed what I felt my time was worth and what I would be comfortable dealing with someone else's headaches. Did you realize that it is not worth it for Bill Gates to stoop down and pick up a $100 bill? Just as an amusing example. Knowing him he probably would though.. lol

Anyways.. I was at the bank the other day. The moron in front of me obviously ran a business, and he was taking up all kinds of time cross-examining the teller because they charged him an extra $2.50. He probably used up $40 worth of time for a piddly 2 and a half bucks.

So, when you build a rig you have to factor in what it would cost you to make it if you make this comparison. I charge about $130 labour to build a rig. Give or take, depending on the machine. So maybe use that as your starting point.

You don't work for free, do you?
Ah, finally someone who pays their own rent

Well you can't base everything on a saying "time is money." Some times you just got to enjoy life and take time to smell the roses.
In that case, go buy an Alienware.

Quote:
But dont you think the labor and research cost would still underway of buying the Desktop itself. If you want to think of it as money, then think of it like that. But time is presious, we all know that. And as we get older, time get shorter. But maybe its time we enjoy life. Not worry about it.
Which is exactly why YOU might not buy an Alienware but someone ELSE might. There are parallels everywhere:
- Some people make their own ammunition
- Some people cook all the time and damn near never eat out
- Some people would prefer to build their furniture
- Some people go crazy nuts on their cars and some dont
- Some people go crazy nuts on their computers and others simply buy an off the shelf model.

Quote:
No argument, making your own is cheaper.
That's because, no offence ... you're time is literally worthless to you. Now consider this scenario (while it might not literally apply to you, you should be able get my point) -- suppose, for work or whatever, you need to have a computer built by tomorow. Normally not a big deal. Now suppose you've got a wedding/funeral/major event to go to. So ... do you go to this event? Or do you spend time building your computer? Not everyone has the time to sit back and build computers leisurely.

Yeah, I have been since I was 17. Sadly I didn't learn that valuable lesson until 1997 from a very good friend of mine. That was one of the legacies/life lessons he left me, other than my company name, when he died a very sudden and premature death in 2000.

Even if we did charge ourselfs labor to build our own computer, did you think the Alienware would be cheaper than a newegg computer and our labor?

Depends. Alienware can be several hundred to maybe even a thousand dollars more expensive then Newegg.

I can understand that time isnt free, but I would rather spend an hour of my own time that would normally be spent just sitting around, to build the computer. Now if I had an extremely bus lifestyle, I would go with either ibuypower.com or cyberpower.com, since they have the same service, but there labor/parts fee is much lower.

agreed, If you want a good gaming pc, and dont want to build it yourself, Alianware is a good option imo. Their pc's are very good balanced, and also quality build. ok,.. i wouldnt buy one, because i dont like the look of their case's.. but thats a different story

edit: let me add an example.. when you want a really nice gaming pc, but you have absolutely no clue about building a pc. no affence against my boyfriend.. but i'd rather have Alienware build my pc then, as him doing it i mean.. lienware really balances the components out, and their system run really nice and stable. sure.. you can build a pc yourself.. but if something breaks? i'd rather have some warranty then.

Well comparing the two:
- Going the Alienware/Dell route will prolly have a lesser hardware cost as they have bulk deals with OEMs
- You will however have to pay for labour and warranty
- Shipping a complete computer will be more than the sum of the parts (insurance being the major issue)
- The effective difference will be that Alienware will be selling for a profit and you would be "selling" for $0 profit

My labor isn't worth $0 to me, but to most other people, it is. Being 14, I can't legally work (well, at least here in CT) in many places. I get paid close to minimum wage to be an aide in a hebrew school class for 2 hours once a week. So, let's say my labor, to the coporate world, is worth $8/hour. Say it takes me an hour to build a computer...well then that's $8 of labor. Still damn cheaper than an Alienware.

edit: Another example: When my dad says that he needs help polishing silver (he owns an antique silver business) I charge him $15/hour. Even so, assuming that it takes me the same 1 hour to build the computer, that's still only $15 of labor. Once again a lot cheaper than a preassembled computer.

^ Good point, same goes for me since im 15,i have a job and make 8 dollars cdn an hour, not much. But companies like Dell and Alienware charge labor for the work + they want a profit from it aswell as the computer, while when you build it yourself, you dont really have to pay those extra expenses so that the company makes the profit.Though i can see where Praetor and Sir Kenin are coming from.People are too busy and some just do not have any computer smarts, and feel more reliability in an experienced company than their own hands, plus many just dont have the time.
