Could you tell me which version you are using, whether it be the graphical or the background service one?

If it's been like this for some time, then try simply re-downloading the software, uninstalling the current one then reinstalling. I have had server problems in the past with the console version, resetting the software has always done the trick, though I've not used the graphical client for sooo long.
