Default Strange I/O noises in audio

Hi

If I turn my speaker volume up to the max, I can hear various I/O noises coming through into the audio. For example, the "cog and gear" sounds from the CD-ROM and the sound of the CD spinning come through into the audio. I also hear the "grinding" noise of the hard disk seeking coming through the audio (not just the physical noise itself, it's actually coming through the audio). When I move the mouse there is a "buzzing" sound, and also big screen redraws such as minimizing an application make an audible noise.

If I mute the "CD Audio" input or disconnect the CD audio cable from the CD-ROM to the mobo, the noise stops. At any rate, the noise is only audible if the vol is turned up to the max.

Despite this sounding a little strange, I'm not making it up. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before, and what could be causing it? The problem obviously centres around the CD audio cable but surely there must be a reason why it is picking up these sounds?

It's almost as if there's a hidden microphone in my PC that's picking up all these noises from inside, but obviously I don't have a microphone.

Any help appreciated.

well.. if you put the cable between the CD drive and the motherboard/soundcard you have a cable running through the case, right next to the HD and CD-rom drive.
my gues would be that cable works as an antenna, and picks up the EM fields of the HD's and the CD-drives electro motor
