Default Sllooooowwwww Old Lappy

Can't figure it out. Got an 8 year old Dell 233st (P-2) which slowed down bigtime on the internet. Everything else is about the same speed. It had previously clocked at 600kbps on my DSL which is a 1 MB line. Now it is at 100kbps??? The DSL line is fine, all other computers clock at about 1MBPS.

I've cleaned files, scandisked, defragged all a few times. Scanned with Adaware new version and scanned with Mcafee a few times and everything is updated. No big bad problems there.

Swapped in a new network card and....still slow.

Everything offline works fine as it used to, just when I hop on the internet it all slows down. 3.2 gig drive with 2.0 gigs free. Its like dialup through a firewall. Slow. Very very slow. Test downloads 1MB in 79 seconds. Used to download 1MB in 1.7 seconds.

Any diag programs that could help me find out the prob?

Any ideas? Thanks, Jack

what are the specs? being 8 yrs. old that could be why it's painfully slow..

Thanks for chiming in. Oh Yeah, it is old. PC33. I keep it around for going out on the deck or let friends who stay over check their email with it. Thing just keeps ticking, if it suddenly totally died it would be no loss at all. Incredible how tough they made them back in '98

Its just one of those things to figure out when I have the time. Old and tired it must be for sure, but for 11 months it clocked in at 600kbps DSL and then suddenly one day to slow down to 100kbps is strange to me.

I am beginning to think it could be the Mcafee firewall or viruscan. I now recall at about that point Mcafee installed a newer viruscan engine update. So, I'll uninstall the viruscan and see what happens (keep the firewall only). Mcafee is a rather intrusive program anyway.

Cheers, Jack
