When you buy a prebuilt they give you a bunch of choices with different bottom lines. He could choose to have his built with a cheaper gs and buy a 8 series with the money he saved. That is assuming his gateway isnt so proprietary as to "reject" one of the 8 series cards. But from what i hear the 8600's are pretty small so i don't think there should be a problem.
