Default Speakers help?

Hello. For some reason, sometimes when I unplug my speakers or headphones from my computer and plug them back in I don't hear anything anymore. Sometimes restarting the computer works, but it's getting worse. It's not my speakers because when my speakers don't work, my headphones don't either. I believe that it's an audio problem, but I don't know how to fix it.

Also, whenever Windows Media Player or Windows Movie Maker crashes, the sound sometimes go away.

Thanks for any response.
