Please Help with problem

So a neighbor asked me to figure out what was wrong with his laptop, so I told him I would. I looked at it and realized that his HD is failing (S.M.A.R.T.) and that he needed to replace his RAM with more and better quality (besides the point). He asked me to get his files off, which is where the problem begins.

I have tried burning CDs of his files, but his burner is not recognizing CDs. I have tried using flash drives, but his USBs are 1.1 and so it will not recognize the flash drives. I have tried networking, but the ethernet is not working. I have ran out of ideas. Please let me know if you have any ideas that I could be overlooking.
