Default no music? i am stumped

this is a long post- and if you dont want to read it: the music on my computer isnt working. thats all that down there paraphrased.

A couple days ago my computer stopped playing music. I'm not sure if it is a grudge against my musical preferences or something really bad. I have tried about everything that has occured to me. I've tried using a different sound card with new drivers, using the onboard sound card, updating the OS thru internet explorer, reintalling iTunes, made sure it wasnt on "mute" (duh), etc, etc. The speakers are working fine, i have checked them too. What has stumped me is that when i open iTunes or any music player, software based or webbased, when i click play it doesnt show any movement, leaving me to believe that it is software based. I've tried to play with the Creative music player, iTunes, Purevolume.com and garageband.com's players. Even last.fm. Any words of wisedom or am i totally screwed. The computer is a Dell deminsion 4600, about 3 years old. any, and i mean, any help is appreciated.

I've had a similar problem before. I have my stereo hooked up to my computer so I can listen to music through it. Sometimes I would unhook it (to hook it up to my tv for good sound) and rehook it up to my computer. When I did that, and if both the pc and stereo were on, sometimes it would short out the sound card. None of my media players would work. I would go to a song or video and the play bar, or status bar, wouldn't move. I just pulled out the sound card and put it in a different pci slot, restarted, and it would redetect the card. Then if I wanted, I could turn off the pc and put the card back into the original slot. Either way worked for me though. Hopefully this works for you, or it atleast leads you to find the problem.

Hmmm.....okay i got an idea...
Download and try winamp
I know for a fact that no matter what is wrong the specturm bars WILL move no matter if your comp is muted and volume is all the way down. If you try to play an mp3 and the bars dont move, something is really wrong.
If that fails try to see if it just wont play mp3s or whatever specific file format you are using. Try playing wma files or even a DVD or video file.
