Default Win98SE networked to XP

Can a Win98SE network to a computer with XP. I am networked wireless, the XP can see my shared folder, but the 98 can not see the XP computer at all. The best I know it saw the XP at the first, but not now. Is there anything to try to get it to work?

Default File sharing and whatnot

If you go to add or remove programs and look in the windows components, you should see the file sharing option. Select that and you're on your way.

You sure? I thought there was something about win98 not being able to see NTFS, or something like that

Default It doesn't read the drives

I'm almost certain you can install windows 98 formated with NTFS, so NTFS shouldn't be a problem.

I think I read the orginal post wrong, he said the 98 computer already had files shared.

Maybe your XP computer has a firewall, but that wouldn't explain being able to read the 98's computer.

They both have firewalls, but we have turned both off and still nothing on the 98 one. I have shared files on both computers and the XP one can see the 98 ones but not the other way.

Do you get a msgbox asking you for a password ford $IDC or $ADMIN or do you not see the WXP computer at all? Are they on the same subnet? Tried manually mapping the shared drive?

It does not ask for a password at all, I do not see the XP computer name or printer at all, they are both on the same name network, the XP sees the 98 just fine.

Well with all the things I have tried, something has worked. Looks like the xp firewall was part to blame, we turned it off again, we had tried this before, and it worked. Turned it back on and in a little while I could not see the xp again, so we added the trusted ip range and it has been working for over one hour.
thanks for all of the help

It is very simple to share files between 98SE and XP (I have a 98SE computer as part of my home/office network)

After the computers are connected whether it is via crossover or a hub or router... you run the home/office network wizard on the XP machine. Then you either make a floppy, cd or use your XP CD and put it in the 98SE machine. In the main menu select "Perform additional tasks" then "setup a home or small office network" and use the same settings and workgroup name. I have Windows Firewall on. In the exceptions tab File and Printer Sharing is checked.
