Default Intel's next 2 Dual Core Processors in One Chip (QUAD CORE)

Intel aiming for 80-processor chips

San Francisco (dpa) - Intel on Tuesday said it would start selling a computer chip with four processors in November, reclaiming the lead in chip development from its smaller rival Advanced Micro Devices.

Intel, the world's largest chipmaker also plans to manufacture chips with 80 processors on board within five years, Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini told several thousand attendees at the Intel Developer Forum.

Displaying an early prototype of the 80 processor chip Ottelini said the chips would be capable of exchanging data at a terabyte a second, and will be between 50 and 70 per cent faster that the current dual-core chips, Otellini said, according to the computer news website, Cnet.com.

Each core will run at over 3 gigahertz and could utilize the company's recent breakthrough in developing tiny silicon-based lasers.

Intel said its first quad-core processors would hit markets in November. They would be aimed at extreme gamers and high-end servers and would be followed by mainstream desktop models in the first quarter of next year.

"With this new set of dual and quad-core processors, we've regained our leadership," said Otellini who predicted that popularity of Internet video phenomenon such as YouTube, would drive demand for the powerful new processors.

I think that they're being a litle optimistic with the 80 processor cores in 5 years....but then again, you never know!

There are threads already on both quad cores and chips with 8 cores.

Kentsfield (4 cores): Intel Core 2 Quadro Kentsfield Benchmarks
Clovertown (8 Cores): Intel Clovertown (8 Cores)

I also heard AMD is coming out with a quad core processor as well.

And I think they're over the top when they say Youtube will "drive demand for the powerful new processors".

4x4 involves two dual core processors, rather than an actual Quad Core CPU.

Think AMD is suppost to come out with quad core athlons too later on, with L1-L2 and L3. The L1 and L2 shared and L3 for each core
