1) Computer restarting - have you tried to start in safe mode? F8 on startup
2) Networking - do you have a peer-to-peer setup (ie workgroup) or client-server? Your terminology would imply a client-server which, IMO, isn't really necessary for home networking (unless you have a specific reason). Did you try to re-setup the network?
