according to maximumpc magazine, nvidia released the geforce fx5800 to compete against ati's radeon 9700. ati's card made it to market first, and racked up several favorable reviews.
early benchmarks of the 5800 were promising: 3dmark03 scores were impressive, and nvidia promptly declared victory over the 9700. soon after, the truth was out. nvidia had "cooked it's drivers to reduce detail and even prevent parts of the benchmark from being rendered". nvidia called the tweaks "optimizations", but when they were removed, the 5800's performance was nowhere near that of ati's 9700. later benchmarks would prove this finding. how can we trust them after they did that? i'm sticking with ati. source: maximumpc october 2006 volume 11, no 10 pg 53 |

all i can say is... who cares?
we all know the FX series was one big disaster, because the cards were quite shitty and imo, if you dont see the difference in game, i cant be bothered either.

This is very, very old news. Both ATI and nVidia have been guilt of using "application specific optimisations" to achieve better benchmark results.

Unless this also applies to current cards, then what's the point of complaining? Plus they must of not cheated too bad if noone realized it until now

LOL
You're a few years late with this mate, most of us remember it very well though. The 128 bit bus crippled the 5800 severely, a poor (and hot running) performer with the noise of a vaccum cleaner.

I read that magazine a while ago to, the 9700PRO was top of the line for quite a while.
