Default Question about video cards

okay so I noticed whenever I play dod:s I cant see all the details in the game b/c I have a very very VERY cheap video card, (ATI Radeon 7500 64mb). Even when I max out the settings I still cant notice the details it just looks smoother. But I've noticed that the better your hardware is obviously the better details and fps. Lets compare an ATI X1400 & an ATI X1900, will I be able to notice more details on X1900 than the X1400 or will I just have better fps? Im really sick of playing on this cheap piece of crap card and want a descent card where I can O/C and at least see all the details in the game. Imn ot an extreme gamer but I want something at least better than my 7500.

First of all the Radeon X1400 is for laptops and the X1900 is a PCI-Express video card. The Radeon 7500 is a 64mb AGP 2x/4x card. There are a number of newer AGP 4x/8x model cards that will easily outperform that one. This will also depend on the board you are running. It's not that it's a cheap card. It's due to being totally outdated for the more recent games.

dear mr. extreme gamer with a 7500,

the best thing you can do is to upgrade your video card to a 9 something (9500 for example). also probably upgrade your ram. how much memory do you have?

...also what's your budget?

And to answer your question, if you compare a X1400 and a X1900 video card the only difference in-game will be that it will run smoother (more FPS) if the game is really demanding for X1400 (laptop video card btw), for example F.E.A.R., the game will look exacly the same, but it will run very choppy with X1400.

???

Anyway, as PC Eye said, you're limited to AGP video cards, unless you also want to upgrade your motherboard. What's your budget for the new card?

Maybe the question should be "Whst's in the budget for a new system?". A little more system information like make and model board would go further in advising a few things needed to upgrade the current build.

I wouldnt mind spending $250 at the most on a new card. SoO if I had a DX9 vid card I should be able to see all the details right?

As for the budget on a new rig, Im going to wait until DX10 hardware, Vista, and quad core comes out, so I have plenty of time for that later.

Are you running an old Socket A or Intel P II system with something like a 166mhz fsb? You would need a newer board that supports AGP 4x/8x just to see an improvement with a 128mb card.

I'd be more than a little hesitant about putting $250 into an AGP card. For one thing, you won't be able to use it once you upgrade your system, and for another it would almost certainly be bottlenecked by your existing hardware. Additionally, a superior video card and PCI-E motherboard would actually be a cheaper option. If you do want to, however, the 7800GS or X850XT or XT PE are really the only options. A 6800GS or X850Pro would represent better value for money.

Could you tell us the rest of your system specs as well?

The thing about those is that they are PCI-Express and not AGP cards. Before being to plan out the intended 2007 build the cpu and board both went on the disabled list on the old case. That rushed this one together fast. But there hasn't been any complaint on performance yet.
