My old AMD 3400+ has finally died and I need to build myself another computer. I'll be gutting my old system and will reuse the following parts to save some money: case, optical drives, floppy drive, and power supply.
CPU: $209 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 Dual Core Processor Model ADA4000CSBOX - Retail http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103739 Motherboard: $145 ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131013 RAM: $255 CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145590 Video: $147 XFX PVT73GUGD3 Geforce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814150182 Hard Drive: 2 x $75 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250620AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148144 With taxes (NJ) and shipping, the total comes to just under $1000. FYI: I'm not considering an Intel route because I've always been an AMD fan when it comes to desktops. I'm a light gamer and will not be overclocking. I'll be using stock cooling for now. I've also got a new copy of Win 2K that I'll be installing. Here is what I need to know... 1. Is it worth it to get the $26 more expensive 4000+ with 1MB L2 cache over the 4200+ with 512MB L2 cache? 2. Will my Antec TPII-430W (dual 12V@17A) power supply be sufficient? I'll also be adding 2 x 80GB SATA drives that I have laying around. Any suggestions or opinions will be appreciated. |

Go with an e6300..its way better than the X2 4000 on stock i believe, but if you really dont want to...and the 4200+ with 512kb L2 cache isn't that great,if you can push tot he one with 1mb then that'll do fine. That psu might work...might be better if you get a better one.
