Unhappy Wireless laptop sucking bandwidth of my pc!!!

My roomate as a wireless laptop and i have a pc connected with a cable on the wireless router. My roomate is always downloading stuff and it slows down my connection considerably. I've checked with the router company and with our router, it is impossible to control the bandwidth alowed per computer. So the only way we have to let me have a little more bandwidth, i think, is to put something on the antenna, a obstacle, in a way it would reduce the "bandwidth sucking". Do you have any suggestions? Thank you

The only way to limit the bandwidth between machines is to set up a proxy. This is done by connecting to your machine to the internet, then using a second network card in your machine (unless your internet connection was through a usb modem) you connect to a wireless router. On the machine that is connected to the web you install proxy server software, as a result any machine connecting to the web will connect to the wireless router and have to go through the proxy server on your desktop to obtain internet connection. The proxy server software will most likely allow you to specify the bandwidth to give to its clients. Its not easy, and will probably require new hardware.

Alternatively, if he is downloading something and has left his machine runing while he goes and does something else, then you could log into the router (via a web browser) and deactivate the wireless network. He will lose connection. Just be sure to turn it back on again before he gets back and he'll never know... except that his download failed

Or you could just hit him

A squid proxy is one way of doing it, but not the only. Get a decent router with QoS (quality of service) and you can limit bandwidth by IP and MAC address, or simply by application.

For example, if your roomate is bit torrent crazy limit the application bittorrent (or whichever one they use) to a specified amount of bandwidth on the network, say like 100k or something. QoS can even be micromanaged by date and time as well. Like during the day P2P apps will only have a total of 250k bandwidth (out of your 1.5 or 3.0 mbps broadband connection) and lets say between like 1am to 6am it has no limit.

Things like this can all be configured in a decent router.
