Since I flipped back a few pages and could not find a topic named closely to this one, I decided it wouldn't hurt to post my question. So if I've missed something big, feel free to flame me, just send me the link to what I missed
Anyways, I currently have a 1.5 ghz machine, but I want to upgrade the processor. I want a computer that can play Half-life 2 and Doom 3 decently, and my 1.5 ghz processor is ok for that, but I want a smooth FPS while playing the game at 1024x768 with all the details up (that's how I have it set right now, but the game can get annoyingly low in FPS sometimes). My question is, should I get a P4 2.8 ghz processor, or an AMD Athlon 3000+? I've heard that AMD's processors are made for gaming, but I wanted to make sure that the 3000+ is better than the 2.8 for that purpose. And, if you have to know, I have a little over 700 megabytes of RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro video card. P.S. With my HP 7955, it is impossible to upgrade the processor to either 2.8 ghz or Athlon 3000+ (trust me, I've done research), but I am going to get a new motherboard and processor and put them with my RAM and video card and hard drives into a new case. The question is, should it be an intel motherboard/processor combo or an AMD motherboard/processor combo? Last edited by davidw00t; 12-26-2004 at 05:31 AM. |

2. If the costs are the same and such (or close enough), the P4 system should be the better choice (definitely if its a P4C and still somewhat true if its a P4E but not so much) Quote:

I believe he was referring to this post: Quote:
..and he is right.... the processor doesn’t make noise, the fan does...(I know what you meant, and I would assume Praetor probably did as well.... ....) since athlon cpu's are not as resistant as Intel chips to heat (I guess they have gotten better), heat sinks and fans become more of an issue... and I would think an athlon system's fan would be more powerful and subsequently, louder....
