Well let me put it this way I have a 6 year old Compaq and it have 2 2.0 Usb ports on the back and 2 1.1 ports in the front. I would go with an external because it is portable and it does not take up space on you PSU, or your bays

Now dont quote me on this, but I think you can use a 2.0 drive on a 1.0 but it will just be slower. I was my 2.0 USB card reader on a 1.1 port and all I got was message telling me that my reader is 2.0 and can run faster if connected to a 2.0 port.

I got 1.1

all you do is hit the windows key and pause/break key go to device manager
and if it says enhanced or usb 2 then you got 2.0

In that case you can use just about ANY card reader.

Yuppers that is what happened to mine

Give it a shot if it does not work just return it, but I'm pretty sure it will work
