Download is slow

I am with BT Internet and have a 5 MB connection. I know that it doesn't always run fast but I do run fast most of the time. I have just uploaded a 4 MB video to my website and when I viewed it for the first time, the download speed was only 80 kB. Why is this?

are you still using the BT Modem/Router? If so, is it through USB?

No infections as far as I know. I am using a Netgear wireless router which is USB.

I believe an ethernet cable is a faster way of connecting to the internet than usb so that may be your problem

High speed USB is somewhere about 400Mbps....so that isn't the problem.

Well i have 7mb/s cable connection and it runs great!The only downfall is the uploads because with my connection i have great download time but my upload sucks,something like 4mb/s?So i suggest you check with your ISP to see what your upload is capped at.

So you're trying to watch a video from a website, and the download rate is very slow.

What site? It could be it's a "peak hour" and they are trying to provide the same video to multiple clients, in which case everyone's download rates will be slow. Or perhaps the site's bandwidth is just very limited to 100kb/s or seomthing small.

There are lots of videos on this page. Try opening a few and see how fast they download. I just downloaded some drivers before and they came down at 4 MB so the connection is working okay, it's just sometimes, if I'm downloading something from somewhere, it is coming down very slowly, not at my download speed which is 5 MB. I know that just because you have the high connection, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will always download at that speed, it does depend on where you live sometimes.

I think you could well have hit the nail on the head. I have just lost my wireless Internet connection during a thunderstorm so I have plugged my ethernet cable in and it is now running at full speed. I suppose any kind of wireless connection is a compromise
