Default Long distance network

Hi there, I heard that it was possible to join two networks together, even if they are in a different city. But I can't find much information about it and was wandering if anybody could point me in the right direction?

Also, how do I found out what my motherboard is, I wanted to know so that I could find out how far I could upgrade my computer.

Oh and does anyone know of any good online vendors for my erm computing needs?

I must say thanks to everyone that has helped me out, i've asked several questions before and always got what I wanted.
