Default Transferring files

I finally got my SATA cables today (for my HDD's), so after a few intial problems, I've got everything working the way I want it. Now, since I have only ~5gb on my primary drive, I want to move several large files on to my new 500gb logical drive, including the contents of one 40gb harddrive, so I can pull that out of the sytem. I know I can just do a copy & paste, but I was wondering if there was a more reliable way to transfer such large files chunks of files (40gb, 60gb, etc)? Is there a program I can download to make sure all the files get moved over completely, and that none get corrupted or some files don't get lost whilest being moved?

Thanks a lot for your help.

There are programs for backups and cloning as well as creating iso images where file transfer is easier since there are fewer larger files(iso images) to move then a large volume of small files. Anytime you move a large number or even a single file it can be impartially copied to the destination. That's why the most often heard advice is making frequent backups.
