Hi, I am considering either purchasing or building my own server, likely a rack server. Now I dont need anything industrial just something idea for small home use, something which I can use to expirement with. The sort of things the server will be required to be capable to do is filter my internet connection, webhost, data backup and thats pretty much it. As for specification and price what sort of region of product am I going to be looking at and the cost.
Also is a standalone rack server capable of this...? Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated. (Also I am an UK resident so only UK (£) prices and suppliers thank you)

well, ill get thigns started with the basics, you mentione it being a rack server, heres the rackmount chassis, its a standard 2U one, so whatever server rack cab you get has to be at least 2U - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/100382
heres a range of diff cabinets for the rackmounts - http://www.homestead.co.uk/productca...tegoryID=54241 - browse around that site, its a good one *EDIT* - and this - http://www.homestead.co.uk/productca...ialoffer=False As for hardware, well, ill go and price some server stuf up, but im sure someone will beat me to it by the time i get back, BRB dragon *EDIT* - whats your budget by the way

Thanks for comments, well reason wanting rack is the size, ideal, not too big suppose to if I have a another desktop its big and bulky and I dont really have the physical space for one. Also this is slithgly a tricky question but is it expensive to run a server 24/7 as in being on the net and connected to mains...
I see going by the prices not cheap.....soyunds silly cant you just rest a rack server on a shelf, i understand their designed to go in a rack but to save the costs....also arnt rack servers limited to storage. As to the suggestion of a desktop pc with a server OS installed, you then dont get the experience of using server equipment as basically a standard desktop with a different OS

If you want server equipment you're going to pay through the nose for it. I don't understand pounds and I don't care to even bother trying, but a motherboard alone can cost you $400, never mind any of the other gear to go with it. It is easy to conceive of a server that will cost you a couple thousand dollars just so you can screw around. Doesn't make any sense. The best thing to do is to build a regular desktop, run a server OS and get familiar with it that way. You can put it in a 4U case if you really want to look professional.

Our HP Proliant rack mount servers run about $7k each
As for webhosting just make sure you have dynamic domain support and you can set everything else up via router and control panel through your domain host. Some ISPs may not allow this if bandwidth useage becomes a problem. |

Well okay thanks for the info.
What do the majority of people do as I have heard of various people having their own servers for home use, and surely not everyone goes to the full extent of paying that much.
