Spyware, viruses, and just crap going in the background could really slow your machine down.

If a system isn't maintained on a regular basis the hard drive itself can become fragmented. That's when you go to the accessories\system tools right off of the Start menu to run the defragmenter. After any liengthy period of time between adding and removing different programs left over values in the system registry referred to as "orphans" can continue to load or try to load programs and drivers no longer used.

There are a few tips for improving system performance. One already mentioned is the need to reduce the number of things that load along with Windows. You run the msconfig utility by typing msconfig at the Run prompt and pressing the enter key. When the screen comes up you go to the far right to open the last section namely the startup group there and uncheck anything that is not needed for video and sound. Once you exit you will be prompted to restart the system to see any changes there put into effect.
