Default want new computer - where to start

This is my second post - first one was regarding a problem I'm having with the computer - and I would like to get that fixed, so as to get this computer to keep going for a little bit longer. BUT, that said, we are definitely in the market for a new computer. I'm so tired of this one. It constantly freezes up, goes into safe mode, has to be rebooted - drives me nuts!!!!

So, what would you recommend for us?

Our computer is used primarily for internet - not alot of downloading (but occasionally), email, photo cropping (scrapbooking stuff), word processing functions (I'm a transcriptionist). Kids use it for games - not major video requirements - we're talking preschool, grade school (Reader Rabbit type) games.

What do you think?

I dont trust emachines every one I have known to buy one have had problems with them. I avoid them like a plagure.

friend:"my emachine not working can you fix it"
me:as soon as I heard emachine I disappeared

on a more serious note I just looked up that computer and it only has 256ram from my experience 256 ram and windows xp means very slow computer most the time.

even on a low budget computer I would still get 512 ram.

If you willing to build it your self I agree with tyfon completly. You can get SOOO much better deals if you make it yourself.

Yeah but like Super said just buy an Emachine if you feel you can't build it yourself. Emachine-one of the best kept secrets in computers. Love their laptops and the desktops have gotten better from what they once were. They are also not like compaq's where you can only replace stuff with compaq parts. Emachines don't care what you put in (as long as you know you void the warrenty when you open it.) If you do end up buying an Emachine don't get swindled into buying bestbuy's extra 1-2-3 year warrenty crap.

P.S. The emachines i'm talking about has a DVD burner and 512Mb of ram. Gfx is not something you can expect to be good though.
