Default um, usb to firewire converter?

background story: i have a laptop with 60gb of hardrive space and ran out downloading music (sry ) so i got a external hard drive for xmas last year. so i had to get a 6 pin to 4 pin converter for the laptop and also a power cord for the hardive which it didnt come with but whatever. so long story short, had a power cord coming out of the hardive and a 4 to 6pin converter to my laptop.

again long story short the 4 pin converter broken on my comp, and the techs say it will be $500+ to fix it cuz its connected to the motherboard, so i popped onto ebay and found a "6 pin firewire converter to USB converter".

I just got it today (came direct from hong kong) so i plugged the converter into the hardive and a usb extention into the end of the converter and my laptop. the laptop says it doesnt recognize it.... Did i get ripped off? ive had a couple ppl tell me that firewire to usb doesnt exist. Also, if not, what can i do besides getting it fixed or getting a new hardive?

thanks
-mike

You wouldn't need to buy a complete new hard drive. Just buy a new external enclosure (without drive) that connects to PC via USB. Open existing enclosure and remove hard drive. Fit hard drive into new enclosure. Connect to PC with USB cord, connect new enclosure to mains. power it up. done.
