Default CD Drive not detected

I know I already posted this in the other thread, but I'm still answer-less, AND it was the wrong forum, so I'll try it here.

I am trying to boot on an XP cd on a computer I have (not the one in the sig), and it doesn't detect the CD and just boots on the current Windows (98 or 2K, can't remember). I checked IDE connections, boot config and bios settings are fine.

did you check to make sure the jumper is set to master on the back of the cd drive or if you have two cd drives then one has to be on master and the other on slave also the one on master should be on the end of the ide cable

OK, Windows is 2K Pro.

I noticed the IDE cable was in the wrong way (the end supposed to go to the mobo was on the drive and reversely), so I put it the right way, but that didn't help. I tried booting with the drive on master AND cable select, that didn't work. I tried putting another drive in, and also cable select AND master, that didn't work either...

WHAT IS HAPPENING??

Oh, and there are a couple of was I can setup the 2nd master in bios, there's like AUTO, NONE, CDROM, ATAPI REMOVABLE, ATAPI DRIVE, REMOVABLE STORAGE (I think)

And it's set to auto right now.

Set the boot sequence to the CDROM drive first, then the HDD?

That's the first thing I did when I started having the problem.

Does the bios even show this cdrom? Make sure it sees it before you do anything also try it again take the cables out and make sure they go in the right way and are seated firmley in the spot!

Yeah, Bios detects it no problem, Win 2K detects it no problem (and says it's working fine, but I can't open it, it just tells me the drive is empty), and all the cables are firmly in place.

Well then the obvious thing left is to throw the damn thing in the garbage... For $20 you can go buy a burner or something. It sounds like the laser is gone in it.

If only it was that simple. I tried it with a spare drive I had lying around, but that didn't work. Although I never actually booted into windows with it, do you need to install drivers for it to work? It had a problem (maybe because of no drivers), it wouldn't open (the tray), so I had to use a paperclip, and also the activity LED was permanently on. So should I try to boot into Windows with it, install some drivers and THEN try?
