Yeah, then you'll probably be better off going with the faster RAM

It can be, with a Core 2 there is still an advantage to using faster than 1:1 memory ratios. I don't remember the exact numbers but I think it was a noticable amount.

You can easily just overclock the RAM youself.

I got my Patriot DDR2-667 RAM with 5-5-5-15 timings, up to DDR2-900 with timings of 5-4-4-9.

So is there a setting to change from 677 to 800 or do you have to fiddle with FSB and multipliers?
