Since the recording layer is below the surface, it wouldn't do much good to press the disk, all you'd be pressing is the lacquer coating. Slightly off topic, I remember seeing a documentary (I dare say it may have been How It's Made) about the pressing of records, interesting stuff.

that is not right. here is a link telling the process of making a CD. the data is pressed onto the cd.
http://eil.com/explore/guide/cd_making.asp ive been in school for 3 years taking music recording classes. i have recorded 2 of my own CDs, and had them professionally pressed. Edit: im sure there are some people that create their own CDs by burning them, but a major record CD is pressed. that link that you posted. im sure there are quite a few guys out there using them, especially guys that bootleg CDs. edit 2: found a video showing the process of making a disc http://youtube.com/watch?v=rc8iltCqrms Last edited by gmen5681; 10-28-2006 at 03:58 PM. |

Well, you're partially right. Yes that process shows the 'pressing' of a CD. But the data isn't pressed onto the disk, it's made by injecting liquid polymer onto the master disc (that video shows it). So the process does differ greatly from the the vinyl pressing that some people may have had in their mind.
